Your One Word: The Powerful Secret to Creating a Business and Life That Matter. Kindle Edition!

By Evan Carmichael (Author)

Hello, my name is Maria and today we are talking about “Your One Word” by Evan Carmichael.

This book really focuses on one key principle throughout in terms of developing your one word or your guiding idea that should be in the forefront of every business decision and branding decision you make.

I have three main points that I want to share with you that I took from this book.

So let’s get started!

The first point I want to share with you is the principle idea of finding your one word, which is key throughout this book.

And Evan really gives you a step-by-step guide of how to develop and find your one word.

And it also gives you examples from other people that have found there one word and the process they’ve gone through.

What I’ve learned from this book is to take the time to recognize who you are and you want to represent.

Having a vision that will take your business or your brand forward is important and in order to achieve that you have to have your one word that really is your guiding influence throughout in the decision making process.

The second idea I want to share with you is the importance of people over product.

We as the consumer are interested in the story that you’re telling.

That’s where the importance of finding your one word is because if you develop a brand or a business around your one word and you really live and breathe that one word in your business people are going to recognize that and see the story that you’re telling and the values that you embody and represent.

And through finding your one word, you’re going to be more authentic and be able to engage customers in a more genuine fashion.

Build a business around values that are important to you because people will recognize that.

Recognizing who you are and trying to embody that and represent that in your product or in your brand is so important.

Evan talks about embracing the natural quirks and characteristics that make you unique and try and build a business around that and incorporating those values that are so important to you.

Everyone has different values and it’s not about which ones are better or worse, but embracing the ones you value the most and really try and construct a business and brand around that.

The third and final point I want to share with you has to do with the decision making process and specifically making tough decisions.

Through reading this book I’ve realized that having your one word as a guiding value and principle makes decision making so much easier.

Especially when you have to make tough decisions that really don’t have a positive outcome.

One specific story that really highlights this to me was when he talked about CVS and their transition from CVS to CVS Health.

In order to embody this word and this value of health they decided to stop selling tobacco products in their stores.

But they decided to do that in order to be aligned with their one word and their key value.

And that’s something that’s very important because that’s a very difficult decision to make, but having that one word and that guiding principle simplified that process for a company like CVS.

Making difficult decisions will always be difficult but having a guiding value and finding your one word will help you through that process.

Now that I shared with you three main points that I learned from in this book, I want to go over the positives and negatives and who I think should be reading this book.

Let’s start with the positives.

One thing I really like in this book is the unique format.

It’s definitely different to other books I’ve read.

He doesn’t only talk from personal experience he also has information from clients and people that he’s developed relationships with.

And they share how they implemented his ideas into their careers.

So you’re really getting more than just Evan’s ideas.

You’re getting a variety of other people’s insight on this idea of developing your one word.

So that’s something very different to other books I’ve read.

Another thing I also like about this book as I always like in any book is chapter summaries at the end because it really just simplifies the process for me to take notes and go over what I’ve just read.

So I really like that in general in all books and I think it’s a positive that this book has that.

The most unique positive that I think this book offers compared to other books is the fact that Evan is a YouTuber and provides daily content related to this book as well.

He even started a YouTube livestream where each week he goes over one section of the book and discusses it and takes questions and answers.

That’s something very unique and it’s really added value.

The money you’re investing in this book is not only the hard copy of this book it’s also the value you’re getting from being able to connect with Evan through his YouTube channel.

So that’s something I definitely think is a unique positive and adds a lot of value to your purchase.

Now to the negatives, one of the negatives I could see with this book is that depending on the reader they wouldn’t like the fact that Evan’s pulling from a lot of other sources to provide information.

What I mean by that is that although he’s sharing his personal insights as well there’s a lot of other people that are sharing different ideas related to finding your one word, so it definitely pulls from a lot of different people’s perspectives.

If you wanted a more traditional read that is just about Evan’s ideas laid out this is not really the format of it.

It definitely focuses on other people’s thoughts and incorporates them which is similar to his YouTube videos where he compiles other people’s thoughts and wisdom and puts them together in a video.

So in that sense this book is similar.

That’s not necessarily a negative, but if you’re not used to that style or you don’t like that kind of format, this book might not be for you.

Who should be reading this book?

Well first of all, I think any Evan Carmichael fans and subscribers should definitely read this book, first of all to support his channel and support him and all the great work he does.

But also because you can learn more about him as a person.

I also think that people that are trying to start up their own business or personal brand should read this book because there’s so much valuable information related to starting your business on the right foot in terms of your mentality.

Developing a strong structured plan of how you want to market yourself and position yourself in the market it’s a very good book in order to achieve that.

I also think if you’re a company or an individual trying to rebrand yourself this is a great book to read because it will help you go through the process of finding your one word and developing a concept and a business and a brand around that.

That’s it, that’s my book review of “Your One Word” by Evan Carmichael.
