Hello!
My name is Maria and today we’re talking about “A Man Called Ove” by Fredrik Backman.
This story is about a man called Ove, obviously, and how his life changes when a family moves
in next door.
It’s about the relationship that’s formed and a variety of other events that I don’t want to spoil for you, that occur once this family moves in.
There are two main points and ideas that stuck with me that I’d like to share with you, so let’s get started!
You learn that there’s usually a reason behind someones actions.
The story that unfolds gives you context and you feel like you start connecting with Ove and the message that resonated with me is that people have a story and that really sculpts who they are.
So this book really gave me an understanding of what made Ove the man he is.
In this book we see the relationship built between a variety of characters that Ove encounters, but particularly his relationship with Parvaneh, who is an Iranian woman that moved in next door.
The relationship that’s built really shows you in a literal sense, the importance of loving your neighbor, but also as a concept, it highlights the importance of fostering relationships with people around you in your life and having an appreciation for them.
Obviously Ove and Parvaneh come from very different backgrounds, but the comical relationship they develop and the funny events that unfold and also the sad events that unfold really show you that it’s important to try your best.
Parvaneh makes a concentrated effort to really reach out to Ove and the relationship that’s formed between Parvaneh and her kids with Ove is something that’s beautiful and really highlighted to me the importance of appreciating the people around you.
One thing I love about this book is the unique writing style that Backman brings to the table.
The way he depicts the character of Ove is really quirky and engaging and you develop this love-hate relationship with him as a character.
You’re getting angry with the way he’s behaving but also develop an understanding of why he is the way he is.
Another thing I like about this book is that Backman gives you insight into the present and past life of Ove.
So you get to understand through the switch into the past, what made Ove the man he is today.
That’s something I really liked and the smooth transitions between chapters of focusing on the current moment, but also going back into understanding important events in Ove’s life as a young man.
Well, if you want a roller coaster ride of emotions this book is definitely for you because it’ll take you through moments of joy and sadness, it’ll make you laugh, it’ll make you cry, it’ll make you happy, it’ll make you sad.
It really touches on a variety of emotions and there are moments that I really liked.
Particularly if you’re into dark humor I think you’d appreciate this book because there’s definitely some instances where it’s funny but also kind of dark at the same time.
If you want to go on an emotional journey that really highlights the beauty of life, this book is for you.
That’s it, that’s my book review of “A Man Called Ove” by Fredrik Backman.
