My name is Maria and today we’re talking about “Good People” by Anthony Tjan.

 

According to Tjan, finding good people is the only leadership, decision that really matters.
I have two main points that stuck with me through reading this book, so let’s get started.

 

The first point is good vs. good.

Good can mean somebody’s competencies but it can also mean their values.
Often times we focus on competencies as good.
We say “ok, they are capable of these skills.”

 

However, good can also mean intangibles that you can’t really measure, that you can’t really see on a resume or CV.
Finding people with values that you believe to be good as well is going to be very important in building a strong team that has the capabilities to succeed in the long-term.

 

The second point is to know your superpower.

Tjan talks about how when he’s trying to find people to recruit for his team he’s often trying to find out what are their superpowers?
The things that they excel above and beyond compared to other people.
The things that they naturally do well.

 

What particularly excites him is when people explain their superpower in terms of an intangible soft skill that can’t really be measured.
It’s not “I’m really good at using Microsoft Excel”, because he feels that those are skills that are very important.
So when you’re trying to find somebody to be part of your team and to work with try and understand what their superpower is.

 

What they’re really good at naturally.

Now let’s go over some of the positives and who I think should be reading this book.
One thing I love about this book and books in general is when they have chapter summaries.
And this book has exactly that.

 

You get to the end of the chapter and he gives you a brief summary so you can remember “yeah, these are the main things that I learned in this chapter” and when you’re done with the book you can go back and review them.

 

Another thing I like about this book is that Tjan balances the practical and theoretical aspects when it comes to finding good people.

 

He talks about the theory, the science behind what his process is and tried and true methods, but also talks about the practicality of how it plays out in a real setting in terms of mentorship and recruiting.

 

 

Who should be reading this book?

Well if you’re a mentor this book is definitely for you because it talks about the responsibility you have and how to improve your relationship with your mentee.

 

And same thing goes if you are the mentee, it’s a great book to learn about what you can actually bring to the table because Tjan believes that this is a two-way relationship.

 

I also think if you’re trying to hire people and recruit for your business, this book is incredibly valuable because it will definitely show you some practical and theoretical ideas of how you can more effectively hire people for your business.

 

Even though this book doesn’t necessarily market itself as a book for understanding how to recruit people, it has so much valuable information that if you’re recruiting people this book is a must-read.
